What is the Bobcat Fun Run?
There are two parts to the Bobcat Fun Run. The first part is the annual pledge drive that began in September where students are asked to collect pledges from family members, relatives and friends that will sponsor them to participate in the "Fun Run". Parents assist their student(s) in collecting pledges from co-workers and business sponsors. There are prizes for the students that collect the most pledges and prizes that each student can earn based on the amount of money they receive through the pledges. The second part of the event is the actual day the students participate by running at Gillis Park (corner of Oltorf and First Street). We walk from the school to the park, guided by Austin Police Officers, parents, families, teachers, and school administration. As the students run their laps, volunteers count each lap. Prizes are awarded for the most laps run in each grade/age division. We also have a separate obstacle course for middle school students.
Is the Bobcat Fun Run a Fundraiser?
Yes, this is the largest fundraiser we have at our school. Every year, St. Ignatius, Martyr, Catholic School has many needs and areas of improvement that need funding. This is a great way to get the whole school involved in helping our school meet these needs; have our students involved, have fun, and raise money for our school. Seven years ago, the Fun Run raised about $5,000; last year, our school raised over $70,000. About seven years ago, the administration decided to focus their efforts in two large sources of fundraising; HOPE and the Fun Run. We are glad we don’t have to sell candy, wrapping paper, or trinkets like many of the other schools.
How does the pledge drive work?
Each student receives a pledge sheet, and a moneybag to collect their money, and an information packet. The pledge drive will go on through the day before the Fun Run, Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 12 noon. The students collect money from friends and relatives or their parents can collect money from co-workers or sponsors throughout this time. Money will be turned in to the office only on Thursdays. The money will be counted and deposited by the school administration. Outside each classroom there will be a class thermometer, to monitor the amount of money each class has raised. Announcements will be made at Monday morning assembly on the pledge drive standings and there will also be a school-tracking thermometer. Receipts are available for people that want to make this a tax-deductible contribution.
What is the school parents’ obligation to the Fun Run?
As parents of a Catholic School, it is important to support the school financially. Tuition does not cover the full cost of educating the students and this fundraiser helps the school cover that cost. Each family, when they register, makes a commitment to help raise $300.00 per family per year (the total amount of this commitment for 100% participation is $54,000) either by HOPE profits or through the Fun Run. This is a big opportunity to meet that goal.
Can I get sponsors to contribute money or items?
Yes, we need sponsors at every level to donate items or money. If they donate money, students/families can use that towards their pledge drive. We also need items for our event as well. (These items cannot be used toward pledge drive).
Where is the money going?
Each year the School and Parish Administration determine where the proceeds will be used. This is subject to change, depending on what current or emergency needs arise. A portion of the money goes to the General Operating Budget. In the past years, the Fun Run profits have paid for the PreK-3 playground, books for the library, TV/DVD sets for the classrooms, instructional technology items, school security upgrades, a new playground for grades PK4 - 4th grade, new Math textbooks for grades Kindergarten to 8th grade for School Year 2009-2010, and in 2008, to install a new privacy fence for the school playground.
