Starting this week, St. Ignatius will be implementing a new social-emotional learning curriculum called Second Step. Students will learn skills and techniques to help them succeed in the school environment. Core areas of the curriculum are: 1) Skills for Learning -- where students practice focusing attention, active listening, and learning cooperatively; 2) Empathy -- learning to identify and understand feelings, both their own and others’, in order to practice compassion; 3) Emotion Management -- learning specific skills to work with strong emotions like anger and anxiety; and 4) Problem Solving -- learning to work together to find solutions when conflicts and challenges arise. Each grade level has its own developmentally appropriate curriculum. There are also links for parents to use at home so that they can reinforce the lessons being taught at school. This is a great program that will help us to create a kind, compassionate environment so that all students can feel safe and be successful. Please contact Mr. Shakespeare if you have any questions!
Each family will receive an email link within the next week which will enable parents to create a free account online and access resources and materials from the Second Step program.
