Referred to by Coach John Vondrak as “among the best teams I’ve ever coached,” the St. I 5th/6th grade flag football team completed an outstanding football season by finishing third in the AIPL.
Though losing to Paragon in the semi finals, the Bobcats had previously crushed Regents 28-0 in the first round of the playoffs. With a string of decisive victories over St. Austin, St. Louis, Redeemer, St. Andrews, and Regents, the Bobcats were led by the outstanding play of quarterback/safety Gabriel Vondrak, the big play capability of wide receiver/cornerback Isaiah Garcia, skilled receiving and defensive play of Ron (Anthony) Handsel and Noah Nanez, speed and shut down defense of running back/ cornerback Stephen Hampton, and blocking, receiving, and coverage skills of Zachary Ledesma. Power blocking came from Oscar Cazares, Gabriel Cascarano, Justin Mikell (also back-up QB), and punter Ray Rodriguez. Led by senior Nick Olivarez and under the able guidance of assistant coach Mike Nanez, a fierce defensive line comprised of rookies Joaquim Richmond (also a part-time running back), Austin Turner and C.J. Lucero came of age in the season’s second half.
Grateful for the assistance of Nanez and Coach Brad Cake, Coach Vondrak also wished to congratulate Bobcat fans. “While always exemplifying good sportsmanship, they were incredibly vocal, passionate, and undoubtedly instrumental to our success. Our team couldn’t help but be motivated by their enthusiasm, and that’s what being part of the Bobcat Nation is all about.”
