First grade focuses on developing a solid core foundation in reading, writing and math, and we maximize opportunities to integrate thematic instruction across the curriculum. We strive to create long lasting academic and moral development in our students. First grade is a pivotal year - our students are taught a variety of learning strategies because every child learns and develops in their own way. We know that with proper guidance and setting a strong foundation early on, students will be able to excel in academics, faith, and life. We have a variety activities throughout the day that keep students engaged.
Our reading program is a perfect balance of both whole group and small ability-leveled guided reading groups. It targets all skills in order for students to become strong readers and writers: phonics, word work, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, interactive writing, response to literature, and grammar.
Our math program sets the groundwork not only for advanced mathematics, but also for science. Because we Incorporate both subjects - we are able to encourage higher level thinking skills and a deeper understanding of the skills being taught. We utilize S.T.E.M. activities and lots of math manipulatives to achieve necessary objectives
Spiritual formation is the fundamental force of our program, and we use it any time during the day to drive instruction and give witness to God’s presence. We pray together, worship together, and strive to instill strong Catholic values.
